HoloDNS Service Manual - Special DNS Configurations

Our expertise and experience enables us to provide DNS hosting services that are tailored to your specific needs. Common custom configurations are listed below. If you have questions or special needs not addressed below, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Multiple Accounts - Linked DNS

You can easily attach a domain to multiple HoloNet accounts. This feature is useful if you want separate POP mail accounts for a additional users under a single domain, thus presenting a "virtual organization" to the rest of the world.

To set this up, you would do the following:

  1. You will need to open up separate HoloNet Accounts for each user. See the Joining page for details on creating a HoloNet account.

  2. After creating the new account(s), do the following:

    1. Fill out the Link Billing and/or DNS Request Form
    2. Copy and paste the resulting information into an Authenticated Request.

E-mail notification of completion will be sent to your HoloNet account.

  3. After the link has been made, each linked account will be able to accept mail for "membername@yourdomain.com", where "membername" is the HoloNet account name of the sub-account.

DNS-MX Service

This is a service where your domain name is hosted elsewhere, but you want your other ISP to point MX (mail exchange) records for your domain to us so that your mail is directed towards our servers and to your e-mail services here.

To set up DNS-MX Service, do the following:

  1. Send an authenticated request notifying us that you want DNS-MX service for "yourdomain.com". In your request, be sure to include authorization for the setup fee which will be incurred when this service is installed on your account. Also, if you want the mail pointed into your UUCP site, state this explicitly and provide your UUCP sitename.

  2. Have your other ISP set up two MX records for "yourdomain.com" as follows:
       yourdomain.com. IN MX 10 mail.holonet.net.
       yourdomain.com. IN MX 20 altmail.holonet.net.

RDNS-Mail Service

Remote DNS-Mail is a service where your domain name is hosted here at HoloNet, but you want the mail for the domain to be pointed to another ISP where you have e-mail services or directly to your own mailserver.

To set up RDNS-Mail service, do the following:

  1. Send an authenticated request notifying us that you want RDNS service for "yourdomain.com" and provide the host name that you would like us to point the MX record(s) for your domain to.

Please note that MX records must point to host names, not IP addresses. If you want your mailserver to have a hostname under your domain, we will have to also setup an A record for it.

In your request, include authorization for fees regarding this service. Such fees depend on the case, so please contact us beforehand for pricing information.

  2. Be sure that your other ISP or your mailserver is set up on the other end to properly accept and handle the mail for your domain.

RDNS-WWW Service

This is a service where your domain name is hosted here at HoloNet, but you want us to point the "www.yourdomain.com" record pointed to another ISP where you have webhosting service. To set up RDNS-WWW service, do the following:

  1. Send an authenticated request notifying us that you want RDNS-WWW service for "www.yourdomain.com" and provide the IP address or host name that you would like us to point the record to.

We cannot point to a subdirectory, so if your website at the other ISP has a URL similar to "www.otherdomain.com/~myspace/", this will not work.

In your request, include authorization for fees regarding this service.

  2. Be sure that your other ISP or your mailserver is set up on the other end to properly point queries to your website.
